Kaparot
Dear Community Members,
On the days leading up to Yom Kippur, we perform the custom of Kaparot.
Traditionally, Kaparot consists of waving a chicken over one’s head three times while reciting the appropriate text.
The chicken is then slaughtered in accordance with the laws of kashrut.
We ask of G‑d that if we were destined to be the recipients of harsh decrees in the new year, may they be transferred to this chicken in the merit of this mitzvah of tzedakah.
For a male, one rooster; for a female, one hen; and for a pregnant woman, a combination of three birds are used.
Today, money is more commonly used instead of a chicken to fulfill the mitzvah and then donated to tzedakah.
As in past years, our Rabbis will perform the custom of kaparot on your behalf. The donation amount for each person is $18 which will be handed to the needy of our community.
Deadline: Friday, October 11 at 9AM (Erev Yom Kippur)
Wishing you all a happy and sweet New Year.
